The Black Mediterranean in Action symposium builds on the momentum of the November 2016 symposium, "The Black Mediterranean and the Migrant Crisis" at Birmingham City University. The 2016 event brought together academics, activists, and artists to discuss the potential of the Black Mediterranean, a concept used by Alessandra di Maio and a growing number of other scholars, to help articulate the connections between ongoing black liberation movements in Europe and the current "refugee crisis." The Black Mediterranean in Action seeks to place Black Studies in dialogue with emerging body of scholarship that is radically reconceptualizing the Mediterranean, all while continuing our earlier emphasis on the necessarily blurred line between academia and activism at this historical conjuncture.
