Roundtable: New Histories of Language
Wednesday, 14 July 2021
15:00 - 17:00 UK Time
Online via Zoom (registration details below)
This roundtable brings together scholars whose work reflects exciting new approaches to the history of language, covering a variety of time periods and geographies. It explores questions such as: What is the role of linguistic difference in historical empires, from the medieval to the modern? How have historians approached themes like multilingualism, language mediation and language learning? How has the discipline changed over the years? How useful are methods from historical linguistics or literary studies in historical works on multilingualism? What might a ‘social history of language’ look like today?
Sponsored by the Past and Present Society, and hosted by Dr John Gallagher and Dr Purba Hossain (University of Leeds), our speakers include Prof. Ardis Butterfield (Yale University), Dr Paul Cohen (University of Toronto), Dr Margaret Kelleher (University College Dublin), Dr Rachel Leow (University of Cambridge) and Dr Farina Mir (University of Michigan).
