Panel Abstract

During the Early Modern Period, European thought was shaped by the consciousness of the otherand by the knowledge that was unveiled by explorers, traders, missionaries, and artists who travelled around the world. The maritime trading routes enabled not only a closer and constant flow of exotic, artistic and natural objects avidly collected in European wunderkammer, but also the compilation of visual and literary descriptions about Asian cultures.

Professor Donald F. Lach was one of the pioneer scholars examining how the European perception of Asian civilizations changed throughout the centuries. During the Age of Discoveries (16th-18thcenturies), European travellers gradually formed a realistic image of Asia, although sometimes that image was informed by the political and religious agenda of the European powers. Other times, travellers were willing to romanticise on the rapid spread of Christianity and to emphasise the curious traits of Asian peoples and their cultural practices. These accounts were often accompanied by illustrations referring to the languages, religions, and other anthropological details.

This panel discusses the expanded field of visual representation as a process of organising knowledge about Asia and Asian cultures, and the construction of European perceptions of Asia. Presentations can explore any form of representation of Asian cultures in any type of artistic production, material culture, collections, illustrated books, cartography and maps. We also invite proposals that address to the interplay between literary descriptions and artistic production, theoretical issues such as ekphrasismimesissimulacra, allusion, intimacy, alterity, artistic eclecticism, and pastiche.
