Dear colleagues,

Murals created in 1935-1936 by the Russian-American-Soviet artist Victor Arnautoff (Viktor Mikhailovich Arnautov) are currently the subject of intense discussion and may be destroyed.  You can read about the issue in the San Francisco Chronicleand New York Times:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/11/arts/design/george-washington-murals-ugly-history-debat...

https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Offensive-or-important-Debate-flares-anew-over...

https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/editorials/article/Editorial-Erasing-SF-school-murals-...

The Russian Community Council has initiated a petition here:  https://www.change.org/p/san-francisco-board-of-education-prevent-the-removal-of-victor-ar...

The school board is likely to act on the matter within the next month.  If you would like to write to the school board about the issue, The SFUSD website does not make it easy to find contact information, but you can find it here.

Thank you.
