Nominations Solicited for ASEEES Award for Distinguished Contributions

Denise Youngblood Discussion

I’m writing as ASEEES Honors Committee chair to encourage you to nominate candidates for the ASEEES prize for Distinguished Contributions to Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies.  The award, which was established in 1970, is intended to recognize significant contributions to Slavic, Eurasian, and East European studies through scholarship, teaching and mentorship, and service to the profession. Although many awardees have been emeritus professors in their 70s or older, nominations are not limited to that cohort.

This year I’m  pleased to announce that the ASEEES Executive Committee has approved some of the recommendations that the Committee on the Status of Women asked for last year.  First, the committee was expanded from three  to five members, to better represent the diversity of the field.   Additionally, the guidelines for the committee have been changed to make it crystal clear that this award is not intended to be primarily based on the length of one’s bibliography but rather, on the entirety of one’s career.

Nominations must at minimum include a detailed letter attesting to the candidate’s accomplishments in the three areas noted above, which may be signed from more than one person, and the candidate’s cv.  In the two years that I’ve served on the committee, successful nominations have also included additional letters of support.  These materials must be sent to me at denise.youngblood@uvm.edu no later than April 1.  I’ll be glad to answer questions about the process off-list.

I’m hoping for a robust and diverse pool of nominees.  Many thanks for your help.
