Leaving St. Petersburg in Summertime

Paula Eisenstein-Baker Discussion

In cataloging the works of composer Leo Zeitlin (Tseitlin) (1884-1930), I realize that he was often away from St. Petersburg in the summer (and often in Ekaterinoslav, where he eventually lived).

Leaving town seems to be a familiar summertime pattern, but I haven't been able to find anyone who has written about WHY people left St. Petersburg in the summer. Was it just the style if you had the wherewithal? I'd be grateful for any sources that discuss this (in English, please).

I might suggest looking at Stephen Lovell's book Summerfolk (2003) on the summer dacha phenomenon. Some reasons for summer departures being disease, comfort, costs, sociability and yes, style.
