I am putting together a panel at the upcoming MESA conference on the history of recreational drugs in the Middle East. I have two other panelists and seek to have one additional presenter who could talk about anything related to the history of tobacco, tea, coffee, alcohol, opium, cannabis, etc. in any part of the Middle East, North Africa, and Central or South Asia. All historical periods are considered.

Roundtable: Projects of Modernity in Twentieth-Century Arabic Poetry

The proposed roundtable builds on the proceedings of a double-panel, On the Margins of “Shi‘r,” which convened in New Orleans as part of MESA 2019.
