H-Horn aims to facilitate scholarly collaboration and exchanges between professionals interested in the history and culture of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. One of the primary objectives of H-Horn is to reach beyond national, sub-national, religious and ethnic lines and offer all scholars of the Horn a forum in which to address major issues and controversies that have defined, and continue to define, the history of the Horn of Africa, particularly in recent decades.
In April 2018 the 150th anniversary of the fall of Amba Maqdala and the tragic death of Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia will be celebrated. The fate of Maqdala in 1868 was one of the defining chapters in the history of modern Ethiopia and in the wider world it became an icon of African utopia and tragedy under colonialism.

First of all, the 20th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies (ICES20) would like to announce
that ICES20 will take place on 1 st – 5 th October, 2018 at Mekelle University, Ethiopia.
At the same time, ICES20 welcomes specialized academic panels to be organized by small groups
of researchers active in Ethiopian Studies worldwide. The conference will consist of general thematic
panels, offered by the conference organizers, and specialized panels offered by colleagues based on
