Looking for work on the Holocaust and class

As many of you will know, discussing the role of class during and after the Holocaust has been a greater "taboo" than the years it took to discuss gender. Of course, there was plenty of such discussion during the destruction itself, as in the ghetto chronicles and diaries, and representing the range of political parties involved.

Did "bureaucratic rationality" cause the Holocaust?

I have just read a short book by the Italian Trotskyist Enzo Traverso, The Origins of Nazi Violence (New Press, 2003) that seeks to rearrange our understanding of the sources of genocide.

Any lingering antisemitism from antiquity or the Middle Ages is rejected in favor of imperialism and the scientific racism it spawned. Thus, despite the author's disavowals, there is little unique about the Holocaust--it is but one of many examples of modernity's onward march. It is one inevitable aspect of "the civilizing process", says Traverso.
