I was startled by one statement in Oliva's summary of Watry's book: "Losing the offshore islands of Matsu and Quemoy to Communist China would have endangered the position of Taiwan, a vital link in the American security chain in the Pacific." If the People's Republic of China (PRC) had taken Matsu and Quemoy, the PRC would still have been utterly incapable of taking Taiwan, incapable even of seriously threatening Taiwan.
