In the Middle Ages, maritime conflict has developed hand in hand with international trade. Over time, specific institutions were established to address disputes arising from violence or mishap at sea and in coastal areas. Recent historiography emphasises that late-medieval merchants, together with consuetudinary law and common legal practices, relied on the legal autonomy of municipal governments to resolve maritime and commercial conflicts.

Global in scope and written for high school students and undergraduates, this work will cover cities and urbanization from the ancient world to the present. It will contain sections on 30 to 35 civilizations across world history. Each section will include an overview essay followed by roughly 30 alphabetically arranged encyclopedia entries on topics related to cities and urbanization within the civilization.
