This conference uses the career and achievements of one of the most important medical scholars of the seventeenth century, Daniel Sennert, to construct a systematic analysis of how medical knowledge was created and disseminated in the early modern era. Sennert (1572-1637) was one of the most prolific, innovative and influential physicians of the period.

The first “concentration camps” emerged at the end of the 19th century. The Spanish introduced camps in Cuba, the United States in the Philippines, the British in the South African Republic (Transvaal), and, later, the Germans in German Southwest Africa. The camps were used to target a wide range of persons in large-scale conflicts.
In the last 60 years, the number of tourists in European Mediterranean countries has multiplied exponentially. In these countries, tourism is one of the largest service industries, therefore building a successful, destination brand is of major concern for the economy. It has also, however, societal and ideational consequences. Competing for the same ‘product’ of tourism on a global scale forms a huge part of nation branding. The narrative and imagery of a country’s attractions feeds into the construction and revamping of national identities.
