War is an extreme aural experience and is one of the loudest events of human history. The cacophony of weapons, the sounds of signal instruments, the shouts of combatants and the cries of wounded people and animals make military combat an exceptional situation. War is not only inseparable from violence, but also from sound. The 2023 inter-epochal and interdisciplinary symposium is dedicated to precisely this acoustic conglomerate and its significance for the experience and memory of war.

Dostoevsky's Women and the Image of the Femme Fatale in the European Novel , NeMLA, March 7-10, 2024
The creative legacy of Dostoevsky left a memorable gallery of extraordinary female characters, from Sonia in Crime and Punishment to Grushen'ka in Brothers Karamazov and Nastasia Philippovna in The Idiot. The proposed session will analyze the complex images of women in Dostoevsky novels, focusing on the archetypal female characters in his major novels vis-a-vis other Russian realist novels, such as the works of Leo Tolstoy and Turgenev, investigating social and cultural gender norms of that period.
