The end of communist regimes triggered a series of convoluted memory wars on all sides of the political spectrum. To various degrees, the politics of memory impacted the memory cultures of populously diverse regions around the globe. While state-sponsored museums and memorials received consistent attention in academic studies dedicated to these topics, the cultural (artistic) renderings are less addressed. This workshop’s main aim is to disentangle the multifarious materializations of cultural (artistic) memory in the post-1990s time frame.

„Zwei Seelen wohnen ach, in meiner Brust“:
Transatlantische und interkulturelle Doppelidentitäten
The writing of art history is undergoing today several epistemological upheavals that require the introduction of new methodologies, inspired by postcolonial studies. The questioning of normative discourses and the issues related to the invisibility of racialized artists affect the discipline of art history as well as artistic practices, museology and museography. How are these new concerns articulated in the context of multicultural societies? What forms do new representations of identity take at a time of decolonization of knowledge?

The Georgia Association of Historians invites proposals from professional historians and current graduate students of history working in the state of Georgia and throughout the United States for its February 2021 annual conference, February 5-6, which, out of an abundance of caution, will take place virtually for the first time. We welcome submissions pertaining to all areas and subfields of history, preservation, and pedagogy. We also encourage innovative session formats such as roundtables and moderated discussions as well as traditional paper sessions.
