The Mediterranean islands have occupied, at least since antiquity, a central position within the political and economic imperatives of numerous civilizations. These military powers will establish various forms of maritime control over the Mediterranean space. From the Minoans to the Genoese and Venetian Thalassocracies, as well as the Ottoman Empire, the Mediterranean Sea became the scene of countless battles for control of its islands and surrounding waters (even still today).

The image of the mafia and how it has been appropriated into cultural studies as a romantic business where loyalty and friendship drive a way of life, has contorted our view of its reality. The many images of the mafia we see ranging from filmic representations of the good-hearted mafia Don like Vito Corleone to the fun-loving, soldier like Henry Hill to the flawed but honorable aging Junior Soprano help situate an idea of what it means to be part of this thing called the mafia.
The 1970s marked the beginning of a time where filmmakers like Martin Scorsese were able to make ethnicity appealing through the many depictions of their ethnic characters. Scorsese was interested in doing work that would embrace his own ethnicity. His films, gritty and violent, add much to the characterization of the figures like the gangster. He is also able to balance these rough backdrops and characters with religion, marriage, and family life.
