The 2016 American Studies Fulbright Institute for German Scholars will take place just months before an election whose outcome will reflect, and affect the future of, several fundamental schisms in the American electorate, most of which have long and complex histories. The institute will focus on those categories of discourse and policy under particular stress, both in the U.S. and Europe: immigration and race.

We would like to concentrate on the phenomena of trauma and recovery, to look at how memory is involved in the traumatic experience and the recovery process and explore among other questions what we remember and forget, what causes suffering and how to deal with it. We are interested in all aspects of traumatic experiences, in their individual and collective dimensions, in the past and in the present-day world. We would like to examine the role of memory in both falling into trauma and overcoming it.
In order to attract graduate students and early career researchers to a half-day conference 'Crossroads of Asia: Travel Narratives to Ayutthaya (Siam) from European, Chinese and Persian Sources', which takes place at Warwick University on 27 April 2016, we are offering travel bursaries of up to £50.
