Geoff Eley (University of Michigan), History Department Chair
I am looking to organize a panel for the 2018 Barcelona LASA Congress which considers the question, "is tourism colonialism?"
Of greatest interest will be carefully developed case studies featuring a clear response to the central question and series of keen observations regarding either the environmental, social and/or cultural significance of tourist centered exchange in the Americas and greater Atlantic world (past and present).
The conference aims to shed light on the ambivalent status of cities and towns as both centres for peace initiatives and protest movements as well as objects of militarisation, as potential or actual sites of wartime destruction, and as targets of nuclear attacks.
