We are seeking presenters for a panel tentatively titled "Nation Building in Twentieth Century India." Historians have long examined how political figures played a key role in the emergence of free India. In this panel however, we seek to shed light on the role of social forces that lay beyond the realm of political parties. We currently have one panelist presenting material on Bihari intellectuals and their role in the building of modern Patna. A second panelist examines the contribution of Indian railwaymen to the same process in the 1939-1949 period.
