Searching on the Commons
Beginning Your Search
The quickest way to begin a search on the H-Net Commons is by clicking on the Search icon in the top-level menu, in the upper right corner of your screen. This menu, including the Search icon, is accessible from any page on the site. Once you click on the Search icon, use the dropdown menu to select the type of search you want.

If you click Search while you are on a page that is not located within a specific network, such as the H-Net Commons homepage, you can choose to search "Entire Site" or "People."

If you click the Search icon while you are already browsing within a specific network, you can additionally choose to search "This Network."
Searching for People
If you select "People" from the Search icon, be sure to only type in the last name of the user you want to find. Once you hit enter, you can add more information, such as a first name or an email address, to further narrow down your search.

Using Advanced Search
Use the Advanced Search page to further delimit your search results. The Advanced Search page will allow you to narrow down your search to specific networks, types of content, keywords, and more. You can even save a frequently-used Advanced Search directly to your My H-Net page so that you don't have to recreate it each time.
Start by clicking the Search icon in the top-level menu. Instead of typing your search terms in the box and choosing an item from the dropdown menu, click the link at the bottom of the block that says "Advanced search."

Once you are on the Advanced Search page, you can add conditions that will help narrow down your results. Certain search conditions will have a defined set of targets (like Networks), others will be more open-ended and will require you to input specific targets (like Keywords).

The Advanced Search page will allow you to add one or more conditions to narrow down your search results, depending on what you are looking for.

The example above shows a simple search for all content in a single network using one condition: "Network" equals "H-Atlantic." If we stopped the search here, we would see all of the content that has been shared to H-Atlantic.

If we wanted to further specify that we only want to see Announcements that have been shared to H-Atlantic, we would click the green "Add Condition" button and choose "Type" equals "Announcement."

Once you hit "Search," you will have the option to save the Advanced Search so you can return to it later without needing to recreate it. Saved searches will appear in your My H-Net page
