How do I request a new password?

If you forget the password to your H-Net Commons account, you can request a new one.

  1. Click the Person icon in the top-level menu and then click “Log In”.
  2. Select the “Reset password” link in the page’s righthand menu.
  3. From there, enter in the email address associated with your H-Net Commons account and check the box below it. You will be sent an email containing a temporary password and instructions on how to use it to log in to your H-Net account.

NOTE: Our Reviews Management System (RMS) and the H-Net job guide are hosted on a separate website and require a different set of login credentials than the Commons (RMS and the Job Guide share the same log in and password with each other). You will need to make a separate account outside of your H-Net Commons account in order to use these systems. However, you may use the same email and password that you made for your H-Net Commons profile if you choose. To request a new password for RMS or the job guide, use the password reset link that appears on the login page and fill out your email address. You should receive an email with a temporary password and instructions on how to log back into your account.

How do I change my email/password?

If you are already logged in and know your current password, you can manually set a new password or e-mail address.

  1. Click the Person icon in the top-level menu and then select "Settings" from under the "Manage" heading.
  2. Once there, enter your current password and your preferred new password or email in the corresponding fields.
  3. Scroll down and click the Submit button at the bottom of the page to save your changes. If the information entered was correct, the page should reload with a green success message near the top of the page.

How do I subscribe to a network so that I can receive notifications and updates?

  1. Make sure you are logged in.
  2. Navigate to the homepage of the network you wish to subscribe to (you can find a list of them on our "All Networks" page).
  3. On the right side of the page, there will be two purple action buttons: Join Network and Subscribe. Click the Subscribe button, and on the next screen, select your preference for email frequency. You will be able to change this preference at any time. 
  4. Your subscription to that network will begin immediately.

How do I join a network and become a member so that I can post announcements or discussions to that network?

  1. Make sure you are logged in.
  2. Navigate to the homepage of the network you wish to subscribe to (you can find a list of them on our "All Networks" page).
  3. On the right side of the page, there will be two purple action buttons: Join Network and Subscribe. Click the Join button, and on the next screen, write a brief message to the network editors introducing yourself. Be sure to scroll down and click the "Submit Request" button.
  4. Before submitting your request, make sure you have filled out your H-Net profile. Network editors must ensure that members of their network are real people.

I receive too many/not enough emails. How do I change my notification settings?

  1. Make sure you are logged in.
  2. Click the Person icon in the top-level menu and then select "Notifications" from under the "Manage" heading.
  3. Set your notifications as you would like for each network and press the "Update Notification Settings" button at the bottom of the page.

How do I see all of the posts I've made?

  1. Make sure you are logged in.
  2. Click the Person icon in the top-level menu and then select "My Posts" from under the "My H-Net" heading.
  3. You will find a list of all your posts (published and unpublished) on this page.

How do I post an announcement?

You can submit an announcement to multiple networks simultaneously, including H-Announce.

  1. Make sure you are logged in.
  2. Navigate to the H-Announce homepage by clicking on the three-line icon in the top-level menu, all the way in the upper right corner of your screen. Click on "Services," and then click "Announcements."
  3. Click the purple "Create/Upload" button in the network's righthand menu.
  4. Fill out the form that appears and press the "Submit to Editor" button near the bottom of the page.
  5. H-Net home office staff will moderate your announcement and publish it if it follows our announcement guidelines. As of June 2023, announcements can now be edited after they are moderated.

How do I make a discussion post?

  1. Make sure you are logged in.
  2. Navigate to the front page of the network you want to post in (you can find a list of them on our "All Networks" page).
  3. Click the purple "Create/Upload" button in the network's righthand menu.
  4. Fill out the form that appears and click the "Preview" button at the bottom of the page.
  5. Look over your content and press the "Submit" button at the bottom of page.
  6. A network editor will moderate your post and publish it if it follows the network's guidelines. Discussions cannot be edited or removed after they are moderated unless leaving the post up causes significant harm to an individual's well-being, so please double check that your content is accurate before submitting it.
