Managing Memberships and Subscriptions

This page explains how to become a subscriber or a member of a network, and also how to unsubscribe from or leave a network. An update to user roles on the Commons:

As of June 2023, H-Net has updated the options for users to engage with networks.

  1. Subscribers: H-Net users who only want to receive updates from a network in the form of email or onsite notifications will subscribe. Subscribers cannot post their own content to a network, so their subscriptions do not go through moderation.
  2. Members: H-Net users who plan to contribute to a network by sharing announcements and participating in discussions will join that network as a member. Since members will be able to post to the network, their requests will go through moderation. 

Any users who were already subscribed to a network on the old H-Net website through June 2023 have been automatically added as members of those networks on the current site, since their subscription requests have already gone through moderation.

How to Subscribe to a Network

First, make sure you are signed in to your H-Net Commons account. Click the Person icon in the top-level menu and click "Log In."

Navigate to the network to which you want to subscribe. Click on the "All Networks" link in the top-level menu and use the search box to find a specific network, or use the categories to browse for networks in your areas of interest. 

Once you find the network you want, click on it and you will be taken to that network's homepage. On the right side of the page, there will be two purple action buttons: "Join Network" and "Subscribe." Click the "Subscribe" button, and on the next screen, select your preference for email frequency. You will be able to change this preference at any time.

How to Join a Network as a Member

First, make sure you are signed in to your H-Net Commons account. Click the Person icon in the top-level menu and click "Log In."

Navigate to the network to which you want to subscribe. Click on the "All Network" link in the top-level menu and use the search box to find a specific network, or use the categories to browse for networks in your areas of interest. 

Once you find the network you want, click on it and you will be taken to that network's homepage. On the right side of the page, there will be two purple action buttons: Join Network and Subscribe. Click the Join Network button, and on the next screen, write a brief message to the network editors introducing yourself. Be sure to scroll down and click the "Submit Request" button. Before submitting your request, make sure you have filled out your H-Net profile. Network editors must ensure that members of their network are real people.

How to Unsubscribe or Leave a Network

To unsubscribe from a network, click on the "Unsubscribe" button in the right hand menu of that network's homepage. On the next screen, click the "Confirm" button.

To leave a network where you are a member, click on the "Leave Network" button in the righthand menu of that network's homepage. On the next screen, click the "Leave H-XXXX" button to confirm. Leaving a network will also unsubscribe you from receiving emails and notifications from that network.

View Your Subscriptions and Memberships

To see a list of the networks where you are either a subscriber or a member, click on the Person icon in the top-level menu. Under the heading My Networks, click the link to "All My Networks."

You can also navigate to this list of your networks from your My H-Net page under the "My Networks" link below your profile picture.
