Greetings,

In the French translation of a Chinese letter (not available) dated 1 Feb. 1862 (Tongzhi 1 nian, 1 yue, 3 ri), reference is made to land in Zhili province valued at “1587 grandes sapèques.”  

Sapèque is the French for a single (small) copper cash/coin as distinguished from a large copper (daqian  大钱 ) one.

During the late Xianfeng period, daqian came in different "denominations" such as shitong daqian and higher (wushi, yibai, and yiqian).

I hope to determine the value of a single "shitong daqian" (a 10 value big copper coin) in regular single copper coins or taels or even in francs or
