Smith was President of the Kentucky Equal Rights Association from 1915-1916, she also served as the NAWSA Executive Committee member on multiple occasions. Mrs. Thomas Jefferson Smith was Elise "Fanny" Smith - the daughter of Sarah Clay Bennett (and niece of Laura Clay) later, Elise Bennett Smith Gagliardini.
