This graduate reading course treats the political history of the Habsburg domains. Its first purpose is to review some of the established canon of political history. The second is to consider changing understandings of legitimacy and loyalty.

Two aims flow from these two purposes. The first is to consider the construction of ambitious narrative histories. The second is to consider the special place of modern Austria-Hungary in the history of nationalist thought and theories of nationalism.
