The author began his career a few years before I did and we worked together in a number of different assignments during our careers. I am also a retired MSC officer. Until I became aware of the book and read it, like my friend Doug Moore, I was unaware of Jim's assignment that led to the book even though I was during part of his assignment fulfilling similar duties at the opposite end of Vietnam in the Delta as an advisor to the Vietnamese 9th RVN Division. I was in that position until a few months after the Tet offensive in 1968.

Re: Carr on Piombo, 'The US Military in Africa: Enhancing Security and Development'

Well written and insightful reply from a man whom I personally know has lived some of these effects of policy in Africa. This review is detailed and lays out an excellent argument for reading the book, while including what shortcomings it does contain. I look forward to more from the future Dr Carr.

Call for Papers: Being Bicultural and Black

We are re-opening our call for personal and scholarly essays for an upcoming book: Being Bicultural and Black (tentative title) that will be published with Lexington Press. The text will highlight migrations within the African Diaspora, between Africa and the Diaspora, and within Africa. The text will provide an analysis of how increased migrations have created shifts in what it means to be Black, examining what it means to be Black in diverse cultural contexts. The book uses a Pan African lens to examine what it means to be Black or African.
