How Are You Doing with the New Commons Format?

Dear H-Californians,

I want to check and see how many of you are shifting over to the Commons.  Are you having any problems?  Do you know what you need to do in order to be able to reply to a discussion post?  Did you know that you can now submit links, audio files, and visual materials to H-California?  Bob Cherny and I will still be acting as editors, editing posts for clarity and appropriateness, but you can submit all kinds of materials by scrolling down to the "Create Content" section and you'll see "Create a Discussion Post", once you're at the H-California Commons.

Call for Participation: Survey on affective response to Japanese typefaces

Dear colleagues,

Brigham Young University has been engaged in researching the emotional effects of visual characteristics in typefaces. Our research activities relate to providing a systematic explanation for why specific typeface features have specific emotion responses. Research has focused on Roman typefaces and indicated a correlation between specific typeface features (variety vs. contrast vs. pattern) and specific emotional parameters (amusement vs. agitation vs. focus).

Ethnographies of depression in African American community?

Hello all,

An epidemiologist colleague is researching depression in the African American community and I promised her some references for ethnographic work that addresses this issue. This isn't really my areas so I am hoping for some suggestions. Thanks!
