Istituto Italiano per l'Africa e l'Oriente (ISIAO) - follow up

Dear Colleagues,

My thanks to all of you who responded so generously to my query in January about the fate of the photographic archive of the Istituto Italiano per l'Africa e l'Oriente (ISIAO) in Rome. Through all of the clues and contacts you helped provide, I've found some concrete information.

Call for Papers – The Journal of Rotterdam Islamic and Social Sciences

The Islamic University of Rotterdam (IUR) has a heavy and important task in the West; first of all Islam will be taught by Muslim and non-Muslim scholars. This institution should also fulfill a responsible task as a bridge between Islamic World and Western countries, especially by influencing the public opinion and dealing with the public debates. Also the problems of integration of Muslims into the western societies without losing their own norms and values take our high priority.

Pardon the self-promotion, but H-Japan subscribers might enjoy an essay I just published about Japanese toilets. "Toilets Tell the Truth About People: 150 Years of Plumbing for 'Real Japan'," in Russell Cobb, ed., The Paradox of Authenticity in a Globalized World (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), 103-21.

I flatter myself that undergraduate students in courses on Japan or images of "the East" may take a particular interest in the essay, which examines how Anglo-American tourists and scholars have used native toilets to interpret the "Japanese character."
