FELLOWSHIP: Library of Congress

Applications are now being accepted for Library of Congress Kluge Fellowships. The application deadline is July 15.

Kluge Fellowships are residential research fellowships open to post-doctoral scholars worldwide with a Ph.D. or other terminal advanced degree conferred within seven years of the deadline. The fellowships support research in the humanities and social sciences, especially interdisciplinary, cross-cultural or multilingual projects that makes use of the Library’s large and varied collections.

FELLOWSHIP: Slavery at the University of Virginia

The President's Commission on Slavery and the University at the University of Virginia (U.Va.) invites scholars, whose work focuses on slavery and culture in the nineteenth century South, to apply for a three-year post-doctoral research associate fellowship, beginning August 25, 2014 and ending August 24, 2017. The fellowship involves directing the Commission's significant research program. Preference will be given to candidates with digital humanities experience. The Commission, co-chaired by Marcus L. Martin, M.D.

NPR: The Turnspit Dog in England & America

Good story from NPR on the turnspit dog C16--C19.

. . . Hannah Penn, the wife of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, wrote to England requesting that the dogwheel for her turnspits be sent. Elsewhere in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin's Pennsylvania Gazette had advertisements for turnspit dogs and wheels for sale. And historians say a turnspit was active in the kitchen of the Statehouse Inn in Philadelphia.

The Department of Asian Studies of the University of Edinburgh seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to a fixed term Teaching Fellow post to supplement teaching provisions on the undergraduate and postgraduate level in the field of East Asian relations and politics with a special focus on Japan and/or Korea.
