I am a graduate student (M.A.) at Central Washington University, and I want to write my thesis on a Civil War-related topic. I was thinking about looking at court martial records to investigate relations between troops and contrabands. I was also thinking of looking at court martial records to see if there was any evidence of homosexuality among Civil War troops. Can anyone recommend any secondary literature on these topics? Also, does anyone know if court martial records include testimony? I have not been able to do any preliminary research on this question yet, unfortunately.
Considering our recent discussion of Beowulf, I thought list members might enjoy reading a review of two of the latest translations of that classic. They are _Beowulf: A New Verse Translation_ by Seamus Heaney and _Beowulf: A New Verse Translation_ by R.M. Liuzza. The reviewer is Frank Kermode in a piece titled "The Geat of Geats" in the July 20, 2000 edition of the _New York Review of Books_.
Is anyone else reading Indian Office materials on NARA microfilm? Have you made observations about the nature of these documents? Care to correspond?
