I am a graduate student (M.A.) at Central Washington University, and I want to write my thesis on a Civil War-related topic. I was thinking about looking at court martial records to investigate relations between troops and contrabands. Also, does anyone know if court martial records include testimony? I have not been able to do any preliminary research on this question yet, unfortunately.

The reviewer is Frank Kermode in a piece titled "The Geat of Geats" in the July 20, 2000 edition of the _New York Review of Books_.
Is anyone else reading Indian Office materials on NARA microfilm? Have you made observations about the nature of these documents? Care to correspond?
