  • Fought between the Germans and the Russians, the Battle of Lodz took place in Poland during harsh winter weather. Surprising the Russian army, the Germans moved north quietly. Casualties were heavy on both sides of the Battle. In addition to Russian casualties, the army was plagued by conflicting reports on the German movements. Grand Duke Nicholas eventually called for a Russian withdrawl to Warsaw and the Germans occupied the major industrial city of Lodz.
